Real Estate Industry Leader: Trading Real Estate Brokerage for the Florida Panthers
July 28, 2008 by Stefan SwanepoelStuart Siegel has successfully parlayed eNeighborhoods, a business which he founded, sold, re-bought and sold again, into a co-ownership of the Florida Panthers. Here is how is happened:
- 1996 – Stu and buddies Jerry and David Meyer start eNeighborhoods.
- 1997 – 2000 – They build the company through acquisitions.
- Feb 2000 – Change the name to iPlace to benefit from a more dotcom image.
- August 2001 – Sell iPlace to HomeStore for $151 million in cash and stock - missing the collapse of real estate dotcom shares.
- May 2002 – Buy eNeighborhood back for allegedly 10 cents on the dollar after Homestore shares hit the skids.
- 2002 – 2006 – Ride the property wave and again build the company with acquisitions.
- March 2007 – Sell eNeighborhood to Dominion who is on a surprising shopping spree to acquire various real estate internet information providers.
Wow. Congrats Stu. I am sincerely impressed and very jealous. Stu graduated with honors from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. Few people know it, but he has been a hockey fanatic since childhood. He started playing ice hockey at an early age, played for the University of Pennsylvania all four years he attended, and continues to play today in a South Florida men’s league.
In his new capacity Stu has joined the ownership group Sunrise Sports & Entertainment (SSE), the organization that owns the Florida Panthers and operates the BankAtlantic Center. He will be taking on the operating roles of Managing Director of SSE and Chairman of the Florida Panthers Foundation, the philanthropic arm of SSE.
The Florida Panthers Foundation has a mission to assist non-profit organizations, which focuses on health care, education and cultural needs of children and families through corporate partnerships, philanthropic grants and unique resources. They are home to more than 185 events annually and the Florida Panthers Hockey Club. The BankAtlantic Center is consistently a top 15 worldwide venue according to Pollstar. The BankAtlantic Center welcomes more than two million guests each year and is also the home of Sawgrass Live presented by BankAtlantic and two monthly South Florida publications: Unrestricted and Panthers Insider.
Good luck with your “new” career Stu. We wish you all the best.
PS: Just this month Landmark Communications Inc. announced it is nearing the sale of its most prized procession, the Weather Channel, and will now also be selling Dominion Enterprises, which owns eNeighborhoods. Once again, eNeighborhoods may be changing hands.

Hey Stefan,
Thanks for the really nice words in your blog!
I'm still pinching myself over my good fortune over the years. I can definitely say that while I do miss the real estate industry, I am truly having a blast in my new career in the sports and entertainment business.
