In an earlier post, one of our RealBlogging contributors, Stefan Swanepoel, announced the release of the new Real Estate Trends Report 2008.  I've read it...always enlightening.  A couple of days ago, Jack Peckham's Real Estate Cyber Convention featured a short snippet from Stephan giving highlights of three of the trends from his report.  You can see the video above.  I quickly jotted just a few brief notes below from the 7-minute video snippet:<--break->

Trend:  Changing the DNA of a new breed of real estate professional.
- 30-120 hours to become a RE agent... But to learn to cut hair:  1200 hours?!
- The need to improve skills above and beyond simple motivations of compliance training...

Trend: Growing market share on a slippery slope.
- Too many agents.
-NAR projects 7-8% decline... Stefan hopes: 20%?!
-Consumer/media perception:  Agents make too much money. (?!)
-How to succeed in a declining market:
     a. Make a business plan.  A roadmap.
     b. Use technology... internet.
     c. Outsource needed competencies... consider virtual assistants...
     d. Become part of a team.  E.g., Re/max: 25% of agents are in a team.
     e. Mix up your business portfolio...

Trend:  The evolution of online communities and networks.
- For example, the RE Cyber Convention, YouTube, MySpace, Facebook.
- No longer just for kids... stats: YouTube: 100 million; MySpace: 200 million registered users... (That's about two thirds of the U.S. population.)
- Doesn't exclude the Real Estate industry anymore.  E.g., ActiveRain, Realtown, Zillow, blogs, RealEstate Wiki, Wikipedia.
- Actions for real estate professionals:  Read, blog, participate, contribute.

We just posted a two part interview with Stefan that give you a teaser of the book itself. I got Stefan to veer off of only our exclusive content on last years news makers and get into other parts of the book as well. You can listen online or download the mp3's. http://www.houseblogger.com/houseblogger/2008/02/who-is-affectin.html
Thanks for the link, Tim!  Great interview.  I'll look into possibly posting a link to your podcast as a feature article here on RealBlogging.  Keep up the great work with the 'spider juice.'  :-)
i'm new to blogging and looking for a blog conference. just missed this one! do you know of any others coming up?

Hi Maggie.  Welcome to RealBlogging!

There are a number of online conferences that happen throughout the year on different topics.  Though, the Real Estate Society's Cyber Convention (RECS) is the only one of its kind in real estate that I'm currently aware of.  I seem to recall they have an online newsletter you can subscribe to for free.  That should help keep you informed of upcoming events they have.  Other places I might suggest for helping keep you up to date of online events in real estate might include, well, RealBlogging (of course!), RIS Media, Broker Agent News, Inman News and iSucceed.com.  (Full disclosure, I'm affilliated with RealBlogging and iSucceed.)  Hope that helps!

Yes I did find out I now qualify for the RECS designation as a member of the Real Estate CyberSpace Society. I have applied for it!
Glad you found it helpful, Sara. Also good to know... I think there's a certification you can get if you simply attend (in a virtual sense) any three events.
I just registered for the free Real Estate Online convention and was able to find Stefan Swanepoels Interview, at the convention you can listen to the entire interview and get the handout so you do not have to write anything down! Very interesting. I also found a ton more interesting Real Estate interviews, one by Stuart Segal "Preparing for Tomorrows Real Estate Consumer" also a very great interview! Thanks for directing me to the convention, it's great! Here's the link if anyone else is interested: http://recyber.cyberconventions.com/
