Ray KurzweilHere's an excerpt from remarks by futurist and National Medal of Technology honoree Ray Kurzweil to the Council on Foreign Relations that may trigger some interesting thoughts. The riveting full text is linked. Imagine what our real estate business will be like in the onrushing nano age!

"But it is going to what it's going to transform what is the nature of what it is to be human. These nanobots will keep us healthy from inside. They'll go inside our brains. For instance, one application will be to provide full-immersion virtual reality from within the nervous system. You want to go to virtual reality; the nanobot, the signal's coming from your senses. Replace them with the signals you would be receiving if you were in the virtual environment. And then your brain feels like it's in the virtual environment, and you can go there by yourself or with someone else.

Design of virtual reality environments will be a new art form. But most importantly, it will extend human intelligence, our memory, our cognitive ability, our pattern recognition facilities.

And I'll leave you with one last thought. All of this has already , this is not a new story. We're already gone beyond human limitations. We are the species that seeks to go beyond our limitations. We didn't stay on the ground; we didn't stay on the planet; and we're not staying with the limitations of our biology. And when our genes evolved, it was not in the interests of the species for people to live past child-rearing; that only meant like 28. And human life expectancy was in the 20s 10,000 years ago. It was only 37 in 1800. Sanitation, antibiotics, a few other things have pushed it to 80.

When we have this sort of full mastery of biotechnology, we will extend it dramatically. And it's only 10 or 15 years from now. That will be a bridge to the full blossoming of the nanotechnology revolution, where we can go beyond biology, have these nanobots keep us healthy from inside.

So if you can stay healthy the old fashioned way for a few more years, we may get to experience the remarkable century ahead."

Hi Martin - I think that the best way for me to respond is with a few paragraphs from my advice in the upcoming Donald Trump book,"The Best Real Estate I Ever Received" (due out this fall): Several years ago I was preparing to deliver the keynote address to 500 members of the Commercial Investment Real Estate Institute at their annual educational conference in Toronto. That evening many of CCIM members were accompanied by their families and there were about 20 children at the banquet. Because magic has been a hobby for several decades I often use a couple of “miracles” as part of my talks. That night I asked the event organizers to create a small open space in front of the riser where I was to deliver my talk and to assemble the children (ranging from 3 to 13 in age) there seated on the floor. With the 500 attendees hushed after I was introduced I asked them to sit back and watch for a couple of minutes before my talk because I wanted to do a couple of tricks for the children. In the course of my “mini magic show” I asked the assembled children how many thought they would go into the real estate business like their mom or dad. Three of 19 children raised their hands (the 20th was asleep!) Spotting a spare chair near me on the stage I took a huge chance and with no script or plan, I invited an 11 year old girl who had indicated that she might get into real estate up onto the stage with me, The 500 real estate pros watched. I shared the microphone with her as we chatted briefly and her sincerity impressed me. Then I took the biggest risk of my speaking experience. I asked her what she thought the real estate business would be like at the time she would be entering it in 10 or 15 years. I held my breath knowing that if she wanted she could give me a blank “are you crazy” look as just say “I have no idea” leaving the whole impromptu exercise flat as a pancake! But she didn’t. She looked at me with all the sincerity an 11 year old can muster, without a beat and very matter-of-factly said “Everything will be very small and very fast!” In those simple words she described the future better than all of the touted prognosticators rolled into one. I still get chills when I think about her description of the future for real estate. Think about it every once in a while and I’ll bet you will too! The changes we have seen since then will pale into insignificance when we see how rapid change will affect our real estate industry in the next 5 years. We will be gathering, organizing, arranging and presenting information to help perfect the accuracy of our real estate decision making process -- and everything will be very small and very fast!
Jack how do you think nano technology can be used by realtors?
