Is Continuing Education Important to you?

"?

In the real estate education business the week before a renewal cycle ends is always a busy week."? Why so busy?"? Quite simply many licensees procrastinate and wait to the last minute to complete state required continuing education.

"?

It is not exactly a daunting task to fulfill the requirements in Florida."? The state requires licensees to complete a 14 hour course every two years."? To make it more convenient for the licensees, the course can be completed by home study or online."? Yet every year thousands of licensees complete the courses in the final hours of the renewal cycle.

"?

Is it human nature, procrastination, or laziness?"? I don't have all the answers, but I will make some suggestions."? In my opinion many people view continuing education as a state requirement only."? In reality many of the truly professional licensees that we see view the state requirement as a minimum requirement, not a maximum requirement."? Many successful licensees complete far more than the state requirements."?

"?

With today's technology and the availability of classes in all areas there is simply no excuse to be uninformed or to not comply with requirements."? A professional licensee must stay informed on law changes, industry trends, technology, etc. Often licensees find that continuing education is a great way to hone their skills or perhaps to learn about areas outside of their typical daily practice."? Others find CE as an informative way to manage risk by learning of pitfalls and problems that may occur in the industry.

"?

We also occasionally hear from students who have been in the business a long time that they know the requirements and that CE is a waste of their time."? Several years ago the Florida Real Estate Commission conducted a study that showed the highest number of complaints were against licensees in business for ten or more years."?

"?

The moral of the story is very simple."? As a professional licensee continuing education whether state required or not should be an important part of your ongoing education plan.

We have had compulsory CPD in NSW Australia since 2003. Like your experience, old handers complained the loudest. The common claim being "I have been in this business for 20 years. What more can I learn?". The big problem here is policing agents to ensure they actually complete their CPD requirements as only about 3% of agencies get inspected by the regulators annually. How do the different state regulators in the US verify completion of comppulsory training?
Can you explain the difference between the ABR and ASR designations?
Continuing education is a great opportunity to earn further creditials, which can lead to more respect. md
