Okay, we all know there are lots of reasons to blog: it helps others perceive you as the expert, it's a great way to create (potentially) valuable content, and it's the latest cool thing :o)"? However, if focused properly, it can also help your organic search engine positioning...

Here is something I learned from avid blogger (and top producer) Brett Ellis of http://www.topagent.com/."? Brett has recently started blogging extensively about various real estate developments in his market area."? Any time he sees something relevant to these communities he posts it on his blog --even if it is press release material from the developer.

Once posted to a subdomain of his site (i.e. http://blog.topagent.com/), the search engines usually take about a couple of weeks to index the content. Since the blog copy is by definition about a particular development, the link to it will typically start showing high in the search results when users search using the developments name."? Now, since Brett posts his blogs to a subdomain of his site, this means people clicking on his blog link in the search results take them right to his Website.

This is a very clever way to boost your "organic" search engine positioning without having to pay a small fortune to an SEO specialist.

I realize that most sales professionals will not have the time (or inclination) to keep their blogs active."? So, one strategy is to hire a Virtual Assistant to weekly scan for all relevant information about your market area or specialty and post it for you in your blog (making sure that the link to the blog is part of your site)."? This way you get the benefit without the hassle --which is always a win.

Chris made some good points. There is one point however that I'm a bit reluctant to accept. Trading links with a blogger network can produce good results from as seo and relational standpoint but as it relates to creating content, I think the majority of bloggers would resist trading links if the content on your blog in unoriginal. As I understand it, most bloggers frown upon blogs in which the content is provided by a content provider or via blog feeds and I feel the result of using unoriginal content would be the loss of the various other benefits of blogging. Afterall, seo isn’t the only benefit to consider. A blog is a low-cost, high-results tool for competitive differentiation, marketing, sales, customer relations management (CRM), media contacts, investor communications, crisis management, and research. They're meant to be written in a very first-person, informal style. One person called them a “digital handshake” creating a bond of loyalty and mutual trust – very different than the typical selling relationship. Additionally, blogs put a human face on business leaders, products, services, issues, enhancing the value of your organization to the consumer. In a nutshell, a blog gives your company and its employees your own voice on the web as well as a place to collect and share ideas and pertinent information with your customers and prospects. Let’s not forget the intimacy of blogging which is so engaging that blog readership surged 58 percent in 2004. The point to my rant is that by using someone else’s content, you risk losing the various other benefits of blogging such as engaging in conversations, building relationships, expressing your own thoughts and opinions, defining your expertise and you lose the intimacy that blogging creates between an author and their readers.
You were absolutely right about adding a blog to a subdomain of your website to enhance search engine rankings. Allow me to expand on that just a little. Blogging inside your website adds fresh content and that gets you crawled by the search engines more frequently. Therefore by blogging about current events, your website will get crawled soon enough to be found when people are searching for those current events, bringing you a lot more traffic. In addition to that, having a blog on a domain name outside of your website is also very useful. Even if it is hosted on a free blog host like blogger.com The inside and outside blog achieve two different goals. I already posted about some of the things the inside blog will do for you. The outside blog is on the same topic as your website and you link to your website. Your blog gets crawled often if it is updated often. It gains importance to the spider and the link to your website begins to pay off because a regularly updated blog is linking to it. Then you offer to trade links with other blogs, but you don't ask them to link to your blog all the time. Sometimes you add their link to your blog, but ask them to link to your website instead. This gets you one way links to your website. There is also one other thing, whether you are doing an inner or outer blog. If you do not have a lot of time to blog, don't like to write a lot, or just want to add a lot of content to your blog, get wordpress and add autobloggerpro. Don't misuse the software. Ask other bloggers if you can add their feeds. Ask bloggers you think have great content. If they have their feeds set up so it only provides headlines plus a small excerpt from the post with the need to click to their website to finish reading it, then it benefits them and benefits you. Anyway, enjoyed your post about blogging and got a little carried away. I run a few blogs so I'm a blog addict. http://www.blogs.pn
