During a recent trip to South Africa, I stumbled on a project so exciting I felt compelled to resume my old occupation as buyer of furniture and interior decorative accessories.  For almost two decades of my life I travelled to third world countries around the globe, being constantly astounded by what human beings can create with their hands.  At the time I couldn’t have imagined a job more joyful than sourcing, selecting and shipping stunning pieces all for use to embellish exquisite expensive interiors.

That was before I started teaching home staging to Real Estate Agents, and guess what; I once again think I have the most wonderful profession in the world.  How lucky can one lady get!  Now back to my recent trip where I had a chance meeting with a most inspirational lady.  In an effort to empower women of the Shangani tribe, traditionally known for their magnificent embroidery, this entrepreneur has combined the skills of a gifted Shangani artist, with the talent of local Shangani embroiders.  The result is a collection of tapestries with a naïve subject matter and with colors and techniques so outstanding they took my breath away.

I’ve decided to do my part by holding an exhibition in the near future. As the self appointed Seattle agent for these fabulous works of art, my intention is to import them, endorse, promote and sell them.  My ‘good eye’ tells me that the naive style of this art form is a perfect addition to contemporary designs.  Above all, I’d like to contribute towards empowering these women and support their businesses.  Sadly women on the continent of Africa live in a very chauvinistic society and are greatly undervalued.
